As the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) continues to grapple with dwindling financial resources, its position may not be entirely caused by itself.According to City Mayor, Hamilton Green, the inability of the municipality to execute important works is hampered by a number of compulsory financial contributions that have not been forthcoming from the government lately.Mayor Green said that some time ago a commitment was given by Government to provide $10M monthly to aid the work of the cash-strapped entity. While this contribution was forthcoming without any issues initially,Bobby Doerr Jersey, problems arose during the latter part of last year when government discontinued the monthly assistance.The Mayor said that the municipality was at a loss to explain why such a position was taken. To compound the issue, Green said that there is an oversight committee that overlooks the spending of that money. He disclosed that there are a number of officials including representatives of the government, that sit on the said committee and such a position was never told to the other members by the government representatives.The Mayor has his own take on the issue. He believes that it is a way to punish the municipality and bring it to its knees. It is to this end that Green questions the sincerity of the Head of State’s comment, calling for government and the municipality to work closely for the good of the citizenry.Green also disclosed that the government has not paid its taxes for the last quarter of last year. That money,Argentina World Cup T-Shirts, over $40M, was due to be paid at the end of November.With such acts of spite it is impossible for the city council to carry out its mandate effectively, Green said.He added that it is clear that central government wants to have its hands in everything and at the same time make the municipality look ineffective.The Mayor is urging government to re-think its approach towards his organisation, allowing it more latitude to broaden its tax base.He said that with the two pump stations, Kitty and Liliendaal,Chris Chelios Jersey, which is now under its purview, the time has come for more monies to come council’s way, since added burden will be placed on the entity.Failing this Green said that places like the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) will continue to take primitive actions, such as the well publicised disconnection of electricity supply to services it controls.The government and the M&CC have been at ‘loggerheads’ for some time now. The Head of State even described the Mayor as obsolete and someone that he could not work with.
