The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has blamed recent outages in the Demerara area on an underground power cable that failed on July 21.As a result there may be further outages as efforts are made to fix the problems.According to a GPL statement, strenuous efforts have been made since to identify the location of the fault on the 200 metre-long buried cable but these have been unsuccessful so far.“A decision has been taken to isolate the cable and configure a temporary overhead connection so as to return the 11MW of generation capacity to service. It is expected that this exercise will be completed, latest, July 29th,” GPL said in its statement last evening. On Monday afternoon,http://www.soccerpro.us.com/AC-Milan-FC/, an attempt was made to establish an internal link to allow one of the affected machines to return to service but this attempt encountered unexpected difficulties.“While this exercise was being attempted the available capacity in Demerara was only 58.2MW as the evening peak approached. Power supply to consumers in North,Argentina World Cup T-Shirts, South, East and West Ruimveldt, Festival City, Roxanne Burnham Gardens,Blake Swihart Jersey, Tucville,Chris Chelios Jersey, Guyhoc Gardens and Park and Shirley Field Ridley Square were affected from 17:33hrs to 20:22hrs.”Power supply to consumers also in South Prashad Nagar, Lamaha Gardens, Campbellville, Lodge,NCAA Basketball Jerseys, Meadowbrook, North and East La Penitence, Wortmanville, Newburg, Werk-en-Rust, West La Penitence,Jeff Green Jersey, Albouystown, and parts of Stabroek were also affected from 18:15 hrs to 21:00 hrs.According to the company, yesterday afternoon, technicians managed to establish the internal link at the Wartsila Plant which will allow a further 4MW to be dispatched.“The current availability in Demerara is 71MW which will be inadequate to meet peak demand of 72MW. GPL wishes to assure consumers that every effort is being made to correct the problem at Garden-of-Eden as quickly as possible. Your patience and understanding are kindly solicited.”
